Apparently, 1L93 (0524 Yeovil Junction to Exeter St Davids) suffered very poor adhesion between Feniton and Cranbrook and stood at Pinhoe for some 30 minutes whilst the wheel sets were examined. Apparently, all wheels were contaminated with a 'mystery white substance'. As a result, all services between Exeter St Davids and Axminster were suspended pending proper investigations. The only move over that section was the MPV, running up to 200 minutes late.
Walking over the level crossing at Pinhoe, a quick look at the railhead did indeed reveal a 'white substance', but to me it just looked like sand.

I remember a few years ago working an HST up to London and we struggled for traction from Exeter to Reading…. The same issue, a white substance on the railhead. The only time I’ve seen it on my career and to this day, I’ve no idea what it was. At least now I know I wasn’t imaging things!
After nearly 30 odd years driving that trip stands as one of the toughest.
