That is being solved by the acquisition of those 13x5car Mk 5a sets from TPE, which will allow a cascade of 168s onto the Oxford & EWR services....but they'll obviously want paying to employ guards/TMs if the unions get their way - and I'm guessing they will (or that depot will remain unused & Chiltern will run these out of Banbury as originally suggested).

Might have a long wait though....GBR decision anyone?

Perhaps they can use the delay to build an extra carriage for each of the trains to stop them being crowded from day one?

Not on it today, but I can see the 5:11 Gloucester - Southampton Central has a problem, after leaving Kemble 2 mins late. 'Information unavailable' for Swindon (scheduled 6:06), and 'delayed' for all stops after that (Chippenham 6:23, Melksham 6:32)...

05:11 Gloucester to Southampton Central due 08:09

05:11 Gloucester to Southampton Central due 08:09 will be terminated at Swindon.
It will no longer call at Chippenham, Melksham, Trowbridge, Westbury, Dilton Marsh, Warminster, Salisbury, Romsey and Southampton Central.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.

Yeah ...   https://www.facebook.com/watch?v=674750311993073

Beautiful day again for my weekly rove! Day didn't start to well, the 06:32 train from Melksham was cancelled, so had to rearrange my journey using buses and trains!

The trains are so infrequent that a single cancellation is significant. Next train after the 06:32 is the 09:10, so plans to be refactored and written up.    422 views, 14 likes and 4 comments in the follow ups.

Although if such shops are run by a League of Friends or similar charitable/benevolent organisation then it's perhaps a little more agreeable if their prices are higher than the 'outside'. Run by volunteers, who often provide a bedside service too, their profits are used to provide the goods, help and assistance to inpatients that aren't provided by the NHS. My last time as an inpatient, an emergency admission, I had no money on me for toiletries. The LoF provided me with complimentary items.

In hospitals where there is a choice between a brand outlet, such as an M&S Food or WHSmith, and a League of Friends, then I'll choose the latter wherever possible.

As discussed elsewhere  on these forums I have recently had a long hospital stay, and several shorter stays. I was most impressed by the service offered by the league of friends at Musgrove park hospital. Confectionery delivered to the bedside and a limited range of other goods including black ball point pens, of which there was a hospital wide shortage.
I appreciate that this is a very old thread, but the points raised are still relevant.

Nothing but praise here again for The League of Friends at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. Mum had a recent extended stay after I gave her Covid*. She much preferred the tea from the LoF to that provided on the ward. Miles, a Somerset tea producer, tea bags. Much nicer than the Costa offering. Every visit I would grab a cup of tea for her from the LoF shop. It was only in the second week of her stay that one of the League's staff told me there was a loyalty card for hot drinks. I said in passing that I'd probably purchased a dozen cuppas of the past week. She got two loyalty cards and stamped each six times. Two free cuppas!

Their range of sandwiches was far superior to those from the M&S food outlet at the hospital.

*Covid. I contracted it in September. Mum and I have just been offered our annual vaccination. That's somewhat closing the stable door...
Poor Mum ended up with a chest infection and pulmonary embolism. Discovered after she had a fall that necessitated a trip to A&E. Badly bruised and sprained, but fortunately not broken, ankle.

Got to love where spellchecking takes Scottish friends on Railfuture Campaigners

And there will also be a train running from Glasgow to Dundee via Dunfermline, calling more widely, at Camelot, Grahamston, Polecat, Linlithgow, Inverkeithng and all stops to Cowdenbeath, Thornton, Markinch, Ladybank, Cupar and Leuchars on the way.

Also, it's a pity the line between Aloha and Dunfermline (Charleston Jn) is mostly limited to 30mph

The earliest that EWR was going to be ready was late this month - and its still slated for the December timetable, allowing further time for driver training & Winslow station fit out. It can still work on 2tph to MKeynes without the extra platform, using platforms 1 & 2

Oxford Clarion are reporting that EWR services won't be starting this year (https://web-cdn.bsky.app/profile/oxfordclarion.bsky.social/post/3m3p7cbgnnc2c

"Chiltern Railways has conceded that East West Rail services from Oxford to Milton Keynes are unlikely to start this year, after troubles were first reported by the Clarion. A statement that “we are confident that trains will be running this year” has been quietly removed from their website. The site now says “A date for passenger service introduction will be communicated once all the necessary authorisations and agreements are in place.” As we reported in September, although the track is complete and the trains ready, rail unions have objected to running the trains without a guard."

Given that over £1 billion has been spent on EWR, the track is ready, the trains and drivers are available why is it we still have no idea when trains are due to start?

I just don’t understand how this industry can be run so badly — or why we keep spending money on it.

10:59 Great Malvern to London Paddington due 13:25 will be cancelled.
This is due to a fault on this train.
Last Updated:21/10/2025 10:21

The above is formed from 1W15 0750 Paddington to Worcester, which was caped after Foregate Street, where it had arrived 17 minutes late.  It was more-or-less on-time until arriving at Shrub Hill

And having expired at Foregate St, it was then in the way of 1P24 09:56 Great Malvern to London Paddington, which had to drum its fingers at Henwick (+25), be held at Norton (+37) and skipped Didcot.

Everything on our line has consequences...

As soon as the singling of lines between Oxford and Hereford was proposed in the early 1970s, the staff on the ground knew what chaos would ensue.  But the management just was not interested in listening to anything the LDCs had to say. The cutbacks went ahead.  Despite some more recent replacement of double line, the hassles and the delays continue.  If you added up the cost of all the delay and inconvenience over 50+ years, I'm quite sure it would far outweigh whatever has been "saved" bu having fewer miles of track to maintain

20.04 on Sunday from Paddington to Hereford started 22 late and ended 55 late. Fortunately the Royal Blenheim in Oxford is a very convivial waiting room.
I think that this is the 18:45 from Paddington.

"Users squat, while holding onto handles."  According to my wife (late 50s, arthritis, dodgy knees) you do need to be fairly fit to use them so doesn't suit everyone.  On the other hand at the right event with a mostly youngish clientele they can indeed reduce queues, the alternative being to provide a greater number of sit-down cubicles which increases both cost and space needed.  Wouldn't work at my favourite festival (Cropredy) with a high proportion of us older folk, and the longest queue is often men of a certain age desperate for the male urinals.

The delays in construction and the pandemic slowed the process but, it was predicted, indeed many local authorities such as RBWM, Slough planned for it; also you only have to see the amount of house building in the Hayes and Southall areas showing it is a popular line to live along, from my limited travel to the South East there is house building in the Woolwich and Abby Wood areas

As webmaster, I get a number of emails from people looking to help us take the Coffee Shop forward, and a significant proportion of those are approaching us without taking even a perfunctory look at what we do ...

Hi Graham,

Would you mind if I arrange some samples of our natural British mints for you and your team to try?

Peppersmith do well within coffee shops as a great impulse refresher to have after a coffee, snack or meal. It would be great to see if you felt like they could be a good fit for yours too.

Best,

Amusingly off topic, cold approach invites are fun to read occasionally, but there's a much more serious side to taking the Coffee Shop forward too.   Yesterday's AWS outage did not effect the Coffee Shop, but I have taken a look at AWS for hosting our historic archive which contains a large amount of information which we don't want to lose, but each piece of which is only read once in a blue moon.

Thank you, ChrisB, for that vote. AGM topics there but irrespective of where the job we have been doing on the "excellence" scale fits, yes, it ought carry on. It fills / fits / tackles some important areas - niches - which are otherwise not or poorly addressed, and does so for the mutual benefit of multiple parties.

However, those organisations in the business are ever more required to be efficient / save money and this is an easy one for them to reconsider if they are even still in the business. And if they are not, where does TWSW funding come from?

Indeed, with the advent of GBR in the rail sector, obtaining funding from the TOCs (as now) is likely to dry up, especially if the organisation isn't recognised in the Railway Bill as a consultee/stakeholder. The Bill should be published by the time that the AGM is held, so the meeting can be informed about funding from the rail side of things.

Money ought to still flow from the bus side of transport however, with a favourable wind. TWSW does an excellent job, and ought to continue!

As the Elizabeth Line was being built, there were lots of informed people who were fairly convinced that on opening or shortly after, it would be serving Reading - it was necessary operationally, but it complicated the project business case didn't stack up with electrification costs, additional risk etc. so got set aside.

Anyway, the day it was actually announced, the local estate agents repriced almost everything in their windows, adding another 20%. Mate was buying a house at the time and nearly had a heart attack!

Incidentally, my old terraced house near Reading Station sold earlier this year. Quadrupled in price in 25 years.

Good to see positive reactions here.  Click on the countdown image to go to the booking page

TravelWatch SouthWest (TWSW) provides a unique opportunity to engage with operators, politicians, and tiers of government and strategy-makers, from national to local bodies, and to network with transport and specialist group across out patch - Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Dorset, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.

These TWSW meetings are great: they offer excellent speakers, lively debate, enjoyable catering and good company - and all free to attendees!

We hope to see you there!

YES ...

However - I took a phone call yesterday from a long standing attendee, concerned that TWSW's other  activities are not what they were before covid.  Things have changed over the years - next year, TWSW is 25 years old and so much has changed over the years.

General meetings can be seen as the tip of the iceberg of TWSW - two meetings a year is about the right balance; put it up to quarterly, and it's too much, down to annual and it's too little. But what the user groups see - two general meetings - is only a part of the work and "we" (talking a board member but not with official TWSW authority) have not been as visible and active otherwise as we might have been.  Personally, I would love to have / be giving it more time but don't feel I have delivered as I, and perhaps, my colleagues would have wished; an admission of personal failure, if you like - but identifying the issues is a good step towards dealing with them.

We live in interesting times. TWSW is run almost entirely by volunteers; we have paid secretarial and admin support which is so appreciated and good, but very much limited in time available due to both funding constraints and our constitution of what we aim at doing.  What resources we have in funding  for the general meetings comes from travel and transport organisations who appreciate the utility of condensing so many user and specialist groups and local authorities into a single talking shop where they can efficiently reach and inform the wider tree, and where they can hear combined inputs from many places.   However, those organisations in the business are ever more required to be efficient / save money and this is an easy one for them to reconsider if they are even still in the business. And if they are not, where does TWSW funding come from?   Topics for the board, and the AGM.  For this week - we would love to see you along and help make it a great meeting.
