While I am continuing to review our 'wider picture' board, I found this particular topic.
The site is still there, the link works.
It is indeed a really brilliant website - I recommend that you look at it!

A very interesting website.
I also came across this site for London Underground (and some mainline services): http://carto.metro.free.fr/cartes/metro-tram-london/index.php

What an excellent find. I think I will be making a lot of use of that.

I'll add my thanks - this'll save me hours when I'm playing 'Fantasy Reopenings'

Many thanks for posting that link, bignosemac!
It's fascinating to follow the route of, just for example, the long-gone Weston, Clevedon & Portishead Railway.

I've just discovered the following excellent resource for anyone interested in tracing the route of a long closed railway line. It also maps current lines.
http://www.railmaponline.com/
The lines are overlaid onto Google Maps so you can get a fairly good impression of how development has happened on existing alignments. It gives a good overview of the problems faced by campaigns to re-open some lines.
According to the designer of the website, it is still a work in progress, but it looks very good so far.
