To be fair, BPW is taking fewer trains than normal today. My son is en route to Cornwall this morning, and their Leeds - Plymouth train was (we assume) diverted via Severn Tunnel, skipping BPW.

I thought I'd try the replacement Melksham-Chippenham 0650 bus this morning instead of the Faresaver 271 bus service. And I'm converted

It was a couple of minutes late, and made an unscheduled stop shortly after turning onto the A350 to let out the couple of lads who had thought they were going to Trowbridge (scheduled for 0701)

But it still got to Chippenham over 5 minutes early, which meant I could catch the 0711 Penzance service instead of the 0734 Weston I was expecting to wait for (and would normally catch, if lucky). And the nice and comfy Beeline coach was virtually empty, unlike the packed 271.

Any chance the engineering work will overrun?

We should really look to getting the train service RIGHT - running, and suffiicinlty on time to make connections.

I note that the bus at 06:50 these weeks is half an hour earlier from Melksham than the normal 07:21 train ... that's an extra 30 minutes on your day.

Alteration: 10:46 from Filton Abbey Wood.
Alteration: 11:51 from Filton Abbey Wood.

11:51 Filton Abbey Wood to Bristol Temple Meads due 12:05 will be started from Bristol Parkway.
This is due to heavy rain flooding the railway.

The stopper from Bristol Temple Meads via Lawrence Hill, Stapleton Road and Ashley Down peters out at Filton Abbey Wood - one stations short of the potential interchange with express services to Swansea, London, Birmingham and beyond.   And yet - when push comes to shove, guess what - it can run up to that interchange at Bristol Parkway.

My bolding.

Sidenote - this is now Devon delays 2025, or maybe just remove the 2024 part?
Second sidenote.

Monday January 6

Some of last night's cancellations have consequences for this morning's trains:

1P11 0516 Worcester Shrub Hill to Paddington
RTT :
This service was cancelled between Oxford and London Paddington due to an issue with the train crew (TH).

07:13 Great Malvern to London Paddington due 09:42 will be cancelled.
This is due to more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time.

Re: New Adlestrop Railway Atlas update

Once again thank you for the update to your always useful map.

A possible amendment. I believe the branch from Hamble station to Hamble-le-Rice oil terminal is no longer extant. There are remanent tracks going south from Hamble Lane towards the terminal, northwards Bing Maps show the Hamble Rail Trail cycle way along the line of the branch.

Have not cycled the Hamble Rail Trail, normally just cross it going down Hamble Lane to the ferry.

It would be difficult to get a train through there even if the track were complete.  Much lost in the undergrowth and here is the road crossing

The map, Richard, is a "standard" now.  When you're walking through a train and see a young gentleman with it on his screen, using it to pick out the various historic turn-offs along the way.   You should be very proud indeed of your work.

It happened for me, too, but now seems to be working again.

Looking at yesterday's logs, that happened with one access in just under two thousand and mostly in a single short period. Total traffic remains high with search engine indexing - mainly Google - a factor of 10 times higher than it was in December.  I do not intend to throttle this back in the short term, but I am keeping an eye on things

Slightly off-topic (as you might expect from me) but is anyone else bemused by the spelling of ‘Bridgewater’? It seems the Earls added the ‘e’ in the middle at some point…

I am somewhat confused. The Duke of Bridgewater built a canal and named it after himself. From whence does your bemusement derive? Did the duke add to his own moniker at some point?

My bemusement comes from my assumption, confirmed in Mark A’s post above, that the Dukes and Earls of Bridgewater are in some way associated with the town of Bridgwater.

Perhaps the DfT library needs a new atlas.

Ironic given that the DfT rail mandarin par excellence was (the late) Stuart Baker, guiding spirit behind the IET but also creator of Baker's Rail Atlas*.

Is that page what the new-look coffeeshop posts will look like? I have to say that this format is a lot clearer & less clunky. That linked page is dreadful.

I know how personally people take the formats and grow to love those they are familiar with, Chris.  I have opened a door onto opportunities and been concentrating on maintain the old functionality so far, and in doing so have left and will broadly leave the old look and feel too, though it will no longer be the only way to view content.   But  there is much more to come - you haven't seen anything like the finished product yet.

Re: DFT - Where is the South Devon Railway

The SDR South Devon Railway is not to be confused with the SDR Stockton & Darlington Railway, even in the minds of the DfT, hopefully.

And those SDRs are not to be confused with the SDR. The combined company when the Somerset Central Railway and Dorset Central Railway joined together - The Somerset & Dorset Railway.

Later known as the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway when the SDR was taken over jointly by the Midland Railway and the London & South Western Railway.

Re: Bath to Bridgnorth and back 4/1/25
Posted by IndustryInsider at 13:32, 5th January 2025

Approaches to Worcester yesterday were for some reason preceeded by an announcement that things would be slightly late owing to 'Congestion', not sure why. Also, so many trains leave Foregate Street, cross the river and spend some time waiting somewhere before returning, a station there would pull in customers - there's a lot of housing there that are a hike from the city's stations.

Worcester's layout and signalling method means it can be congested with other trains without much else obviously about.

The reversal point is at Henwick.  There's not much space for a station there, let alone room for a car park and so on.  The number of trains that use it only number eleven a day with large gaps, such as one from 07:20 to 11:44, though many others pass through of course.

A proper station just a little further on at Rushwick is part of a proposed development including 1000 homes and a school.  A study has concluded that a station there has much better potential than other locations nearby, inlcuding Henwick.  The full report is here (page 14 gives details of why Rushwick is the preferred location):  https://www.swdevelopmentplan.org/component/fileman/file/Documents/SWDPR%20Reg%2019%20Docs/Strategic%20site/Rushwick%20SOBC%20Final%20190321.pdf?routed=1&container=fileman-files

Bath to Bridgnorth and back 4/1/25
Posted by Mark A at 12:48, 5th January 2025

A walk down to Bath Spa to catch the 07:30.

Ten minutes before that service arrived, for some reason platform 1's platform lighting went off (not sure what instructions are for everyone when that happens, but there was still a bit of light from the buildings). In any case this wasn't something that set the tone for yesterday's travel.

The travel quickly included a double sighting of the ~07:42 Bristol to Worcester train - once as the train from Bath arrived at Temple Meads as it left, and the second time, catching it at Cheltenham Spa, having caught the Crosscountry service and overtaking it.

The return journey wasn't particularly bitten by the weather, but it was a very good evening not to be travelling on the roads. Travelling via Stroud and Swindon and then to Bath was fine, but everything was covered with about half an inch of snow (or water/snow mixture on paved surfaces, which wasn't so good for people leaving any of the stations). On arrival at Bath, the bus service had been pulled, the road traffic gave the impression that everyone was then taking the opportunity to floor it on roads covered with pooling water held in by slush, and the pavements were evil so, a cautious walk home.
