On one of the rate occasions I get to travel in the light these days I noticed some overgrown railtrack at the location descibed above. I wondered if it was a branch line or just an old passing point . The incline of the track is quite steep in train terms and it doesn't seem to make sense the way the remaining points are layed to the western end

Just curious that's all!

It's west of the station isn't it?  Described as the 'Engineers Up Siding'.

This is also the remnants of the railway line into the quarry that sits beside the railway line at Betchworth.

When I was travelling from Basingstoke to Reading by train I noticed on the approach to the junction with the Kennet line some underground buildings on the east side of the line.

When I realised it was about 3 miles from Aldermaston I figured I probably didn't want to know what was in there!

That's AWE Burghfield,  which is basically the final assembly and storage area. 

'Aldermaston' is further west, mostly R&D and manufacturing of parts.  Also admin.

Apologies - an error on my part. The location I am talking about is about 3 miles EAST of Burghfield - its basically a grass mound with roads around it and from the train you can see large doors into it
