Just noticed that the FGW▸ (First Great Western) Home page has a plug for the Olympic Games and train travel thereto, but refers to them as the "Summer Games 2012".  Nowhere is the word "Olympic" used. Why?

I suspect that it's just easier to refer to 'Summer Games 2012' instead of 'Olympic and Paralympic Games Summer 2012'

Certainly takes up less space!

Even the official tickets website doesn't seem to say "Olympics" anywhere.

I doubt it! Surely the ticket sellers to tge Olympics would have permission to use it? More likely the suggestion about saving words is the reaaon?

I believe it may be copyright, as p&o wanted to name their new ferries at dover Olympic related names and the I.o.c challenged this as breach of their copyrights

Fgw are not official ticket sellers, they are just selling their normal train tickets which coincides with the timings if the Olympics, therefore they probably do not have correct privileges to use trademarked, or copyrighted wording

The original references saying it as summer games are just referring to fgw page, only Ollie made reference to official site, so perhaps making your posts clearer would help please?

I assumed the post I quoted was referring to fgw train tickets for Olympics as that was what the rest of this thread was in reference to (barring ollies post). Quite clearly not that clear after all!

Sorry hadn't realised I'd quoted the wrong post to what I intended.
Anyway I have looked further online and only the I.o.c are permitted to use the official words, there copyright also includes official third party ticket sellers......absolutely ridiculous I'm sure can be agreed

It appears Ollie was right. It is a trademark/copyright issue.

Olympic Symbol etc. (Protection) Act 1995
London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act 2006

My reading of the Acts is that we here are fine using variations of the 'O' word and combinations of words such as 'London' and '2012' as we do so in a non-commercial way. I suspect ATOC» (Association of Train Operating Companies see - here) have not paid for the privilege of having IOC symbols and protected words associated with the product (train tickets) they are selling.
