Good, thoughtful question, Phil. I'll give you some of my thoughts.
As a forum, we're very much set up to look out and provide information for passengers and wannabe passengers. So the sort of questions that are mainstream here relate to things that effect the general traveller, such as fares, car parking, and how to ensure that you're not put through the mill if a whole series of bits of bad luck mean you've had to make a choice between missing a train (after queuing 20 minutes for a ticket!) and meeting an

Stock movements / diagrams etc. tend not to be in the general passenger run of things; whilst they're fascinating for the lineside photographer, as far as the general traveller is concerned they're perhaps limited to things like the concerns as to what time the empties for the 17:56 from Weymouth on Sundays is platformed (asked by people who want to get seats together
) ... and where there's a good general reason like that, you'll probably find people here - where the passengers are immensely passenger helpful - filling you in. For "geek" diagram information, a good "reason for needing to know" may help ... and you may find people who have more spare time to answer the esoteric on some of the enthusiast forums.
But, Phil, you have probably built up your "Karma" amongst members here to quite a degree by asking in the way you did, and if you take the sort of direction that I'm suggesting, you may find the proportion of answers goes up.
