A raging grass fire which cancelled services at a busy train station is thought to have been lit by the charred remains of an electrocuted pigeon.

Kevin Dove, of Essex Fire and Rescue, said: ^A pigeon landed on the track and we think parts of its burning body fell on grass and set it alight.^

Services at Benfleet train station in Essex had to be shut down for half an hour as two fire crews fought to put out the blaze on Monday.

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

I see the hands (and paws) of Dick Dastardly and Muttley all over this one. Seems they've finally managed to 'stop the pigeon'.
