I nearly wacked some passengers today! Call it frustration! I was at Newport waiting for the 1844 to Fareham to be opened up (inbound terminated due to late running) and the driver was having his PNB▸ (Personal Needs Break). There was several passengers who just kept on and on moaning about it. One of them even took a few snaps of the event, of people gathered outside of the unit, and the poor driver. Well, what was he supposed to do, as a PNB is a (legal?) break!

I'm not sure that it is: I don't think regulations exist for train driver's hours in the same way as HGV/PCVs do.

There is indeed a maximum limit of 'continuous driving' a driver can do. If there was to be an incident first thing that would get asked is 'how long have you been at work' and 'when did you take your break'. So crew are perfectly entitled to their break and any who 'skip' it in my mind are silly....

Not only silly to not have their break, Drivers can be prosecuted depending on the "incident", thus losing their livelihood too. Which makes it all the more important as rest is crucial to safety, fatigue is a killer...... Train crew are sometimes pressurised into cutting short or missing breaks by TOC▸ (Train Operating Company)'s, the same management will not support their staff after an incident even after soliciting a missed break.
