Just wondered are the crossing boxes at Colthrop and Kintbury staffed 24 hours a day?  I know there's quite a lot of freight about and the West of England sleepers usually go that way but is there enough traffic to warrant staff being at the two boxes all night?

There may be a lot of freight passing along that line since i dont think there are many paths available during the daytime. Dont they run a lot of engineers trains from Westbury as well?

If the new highway occupancy detection system that is under trial is accepted by ORR» (Office of Rail and Road formerly Office of Rail Regulation - about) these types of crossing box may well close, the system does not need CCTV (Closed Circuit Tele Vision)

Yes, but scheme in hand to transfer them to TVSC» (Thames Valley Signalling Centre - about) within the next couple of years.

The latest issue of Rail says the crossing boxes at Kintbury and Colthrop will be made redundant "by further modernisation of the Berks & Hants line".  Is there now a timetable for it or is it still on the to do list?
