Landslide between Castle Cary and Taunton

From FGW^▸ (First Great Western):

Friday 14 January 2011 19:00

Train Services between Castle Cary and Taunton are being disrupted due to a Landslide. Services from London Paddington to the West Country will be diverted via an alternative route and are unable to call at Castle Cary. Journey times will be extended by up to 45 minutes.

Replacement road transport will operate between Castle Cary and Taunton.

Services from the West Country towards Westbury and London Paddington are not affected by this disruption.

This disruption will continue for the remainder of today and until at least 18:00 tomorrow (Saturday)

Appears to have only affected the down line. Up services are running normal route from Taunton

One knock on effect of this is, no doubt caused by stock/staff displacement:

17:39 Penzance to London Paddington due 23:44

This train will be formed of 1 coach instead of 8 between Penzance and Plymouth.

That must've been cosy. A 153 instead of a HST^▸ (High Speed Train). No chance of a coffee and sandwich or a nice 1st Class seat!

Don't know if it's the same one but my bat-phone stated a landslide at Langport, our 1C11 (0608 BRI^» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains)-PLY^» (Plymouth - next trains)) which is routed Westbury on Saturdays was sent booked route, even though the landslip had been ongoing since yesterday and had to set back.

Looks like FGW^▸ (First Great Western) control are doing a clever job in the circumstances of turning trains round short of their "Country" end to keep them in their right paths on the return to London, then filling in with extra services (West Fleet units, I suspect) to maintain journeys.  Neat

17:39 Penzance to London Paddington due 23:44

This train will be formed of 1 coach instead of 8 between Penzance and Plymouth.

That must've been cosy. A 153 instead of a HST^▸ (High Speed Train). No chance of a coffee and sandwich or a nice 1st Class seat!


EDIT: Can any of our rail staff contributors give a more precise location for the the landslide?

 The set for the 1739 Penzance to Paddington the down 1206 Paddington to Penzance which arrived at Exeter with rear power car 43141 stone dead where it was terminated despite fitters attention.The set eventually headed for Laira on one power car hence the 153 from Penzance.
