even compare to a UK (United Kingdom) situation

Had a ticket - NYC Penn to lawrence Kansas then back except well publicised flight cancellation meant I cancelled my out

Lawrence is unmanned with no ticket machine so Amtrak said they would mail the tickets to my US address - mailed 19th - still no show

Several phone calls with Amtrak customer service - they gave me the option of getting on at lawrence and they would ensure my tickets on the train when I got there (they failed to mail them correctly so I have no faith) or I could go to Topeka which is manned between midnight and 8am and they would let me board my room a station early as it was their screw up

Well four hours after my train departed LA - I phoned topeka to make sure if I phone up at bog early on thursday I could board with tickets 0 no records of anything - currently waiting for Topeka to phone me back after they contact customer service with my res number

I have VERY bad vibes about this

Well this is resolved - typical good US customer service

They admit they screwed up and lost the tickets (well actually they send them to the billing address which is my old house in shropshire despite having clear instructions to send them to kansas)

So they have allowed me to extend my journey to allow me to board at Topeka at no extra cost.

I was still not convinced so I phone Topeka Ticket office at midnight last night and spoke to Jim who mans the office (crap job working midnight to 8am every day!)  and he said he'd check into it and to call back in the morning (this morning).

He checked and not only am I getting my sleeper berth from Topeka but because of their incompetence, they have upgraded me from a roomette to a full size room on the topeka-chicago portion.

I will endeavour to take photos for a picture quiz - some obscure stations etc en route so I figure knowing the route may give you some clues!

Will you be singing the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe as you go?

Glad it worked out but you got lucky - Amtrak customer service is exceedingly hit and miss, sometimes they'll be falling over themselves to be helpful, other times you can get stuck in some kind of hellish bureaucratic nightmare and no-one wants to know!

Perhaps there's not much else to do in Topeka between 00:00 and 08:00 except be helpful.
