The train departed from Paddington on time but got to Newbury the Plymouth end power car packed up and we headed back to Reading for Plan 1, which changed to Plan 2 go via Swindon and on to Westbury missing Pewsey out.

I got into Exeter about a hr and 15 mins

Must have been something that stopped the train being driven from that end (eg AWS (Automatic Warning System) failure, headlight, or something else wrong in the cab). Hence by heading back to Reading and then taking the Reading west curve the train could carry on its journey albeit very  late. The alternative would have been to kick you all out at Newbury (or back at Reading Reading) to await the next Exeter bound service.

Sounds like the least worst option was taken under the circumstances, as adding a second load of passengers to an existing service would have been cosy to say the least.

I had the pleasure of a little jolly round the triangle at Didcot one Sunday morning when my train arrived with the low tone on the front power car stuck on - we all got on on platform 1 then about 50 minutes later we arrived at Didcot again, using platform 3 this time. At least they didn't take the easy way out and just cancel the service!

Care to expand on that? I know of quite a few occasions recently where trains have been re-routed rather than taken out of service.
