The house looks like an ex railway one, when railway companies including BR▸ (British Rail(ways)) sold such properties the Deeds of sale would have included any access rights that might be required to the operational railway, the railway company may even have retained ownership of the strip of land in front of the property allowing the occupants access over it.

Access across old railway land to operational railway often cause problems as the second, third etc hand owners may not realise the clause is in the Deeds
