William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

From the Reading Post:

Quote
Man dies after being hit by train

Commuters travelling between Reading and London Paddington face long delays this afternoon after a man was hit by a train at Cholsey.
The line was closed at around 3.30pm following the incident and was re-opened at 4.30pm.
Paramedics attended but the man ^ who has yet to be identified ^ was pronounced dead at the scene.
British Transport Police spokesperson Jenny Dickens said the incident was being treated as ^non-suspicious.^
^I can confirm that British Transport Police officers attended the line near to Cholsey rail station, Oxfordshire, after a report that a man had been struck by a train,^ she said. ^The incident is currently being treated as non-suspicious. Paramedics from the local ambulance service also attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries are currently ongoing to establish the man^s identity.^
First Great Western spokeswoman Elle Banks said services between London and Reading were still effected. ^The lines were re-opened at 4.30pm and services are now running again, but rail passengers should prepare for some disruption.^
