Anyone know whats the reason is for the 5mph speed restriction through Newton Abbot station on the down side at the moment.

It's only an educated guess but it may be indicative of a fairly serious PW (Permanent Way - the railway track) fault. There are a range of things that a maintenance supervisor can stick a 5 mph TSR (Temporary Speed Restriction) on to enable traffic to continue until a repair can be arranged.

It's on the down main (reversible), across a set of points, so I would hazard a guess at some problem with said points!

And I see they are trying to route down trains via the Up-Main where possible.

I believe the 'V' in the points (where the rails cross over each other) has failed a routine ultrasonic test and requires replacement. Some of the sleepers / bearers at the points (1987 or so) don't look that clever either.
