William Huskisson MP▸ was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830. Many more have died in the same way since then. Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

A friend of mine was travelling on a HST▸ this evening and they witnessed a FGW▸ HST being pulled into Bath by a freight train!
Any truth in this?

Any truth in this? No - more likely just a diesel loco....

I'm sorry, but I just dopn't believe that a 'freight train', i.e. a loco & freight wagons, was used to move an HST▸ . Possibly just a loco, but that isn't known as a 'freight train', or even a 'freight'....it's just a (diesel) loco.

All I can base on is that the log shows that the 14:10 from Avonmouth - Westbury was used to assist. It unfortunately doesn't say whether it was just a loco or how the service was formed.

1410 from Avonmouth to Westbury. Huh?
Whilst I was at BRI» yesterday awaiting the 1525 to WSM I did hear an announcement that a service to Westbury and onward to Portsmouth would be leaving from Platform 1, where my inbound from Shirehampton had recently arrived. I was across the station on 10 waiting for the WSM train so couldn't see what was going on. Unsure whether a 150 had platformed on 1 behind the 143 or if the 143 was being pressed into service to Pompey - not even sure 143's ever head down that way!

I wouldn't have thought Platform 1 is long enough for both a 150 and 143? The journey is bad enough on a 150, I wouldn't want to imagine going all the way to Pompey on a 143.

You can get two 2 car units into platform 1. Have seen it on a couple of occasions. I've even seen 220 Vomiters stabled there.

143s can go no further than Warminster 153s can go no further than Southampton Central 150s and 158s can go all the way to Portsmouth / Brighton It used to be quite common to see 143s at Westbury, but that's not happened much since the 142s came to Exeter and / or the Welsh 150s arrived.

143s can go no further than Warminster 153s can go no further than Southampton Central 150s and 158s can go all the way to Portsmouth / Brighton Is there a reason for this? Can they physically not go that far in one journey or is it all to do with track clearances?

I suspected as much. I'd hazard a guess that the 143 went as far as WSB» . With a subsequent cancellation of a SVB line service. Anyone confirm?
The PA▸ announcement also mentioned a Weymouth service to or from Westbury (couldn't hear clearly - not unusual at BRI» !) so it would appear that some serious unit shuffling was going on!
