Three people managed to scramble from a car before it was hit by a train on the outskirts of Salisbury, Wiltshire.

The driver of the car apparently lost control and the vehicle went through a fence, rolled down an embankment and came to rest on the track.

A Network Rail spokeswoman said the 1730 Cardiff to Portsmouth train struck the car which was pushed off the track.

"The train was damaged but not derailed or disabled. No passengers on the train were injured," the spokeswoman added.

British Transport Police said its officers were called to Skew Bridge, Wilton Road, at 1940 GMT on Wednesday.

"On arrival at it was found the vehicle had been struck by the train and was severely damaged," the spokesman said.

The line was closed for two hours and some services were disrupted.

The car driver is being questioned by Wiltshire Police.

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post - a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London, depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

At risk of asking a crashingly stupid question, why are AXC» (Arriva Cross Country - about) leaning the route through Salisbury?

Good news no one was injured. Bad news one of FGW▸ (First Great Western) already stretched local fleet is damaged. Anyone know how badly?

i found the unit this morning not too much damage the autocoupler electrical box is damaged and the front valance is smashed up not too much damage considering  Smiley

i do have a picture but its to large to upload and dont know how to make it smaller!!!
