From the West Briton: 'Trolleys: any other station but Truro'
A rail passenger at Truro station has lambasted authorities for refusing to provide luggage trolleys on platforms.
Keith McDowall said the station's "absurd refusal" to permit the trolleys was "inexplicable".
Luggage trolleys have been banished from the platforms since the controversial electronic gates were introduced at the station, which is run by First Great Western.
Mr McDowall said: "If a passenger needs a trolley he or she has to pass through the gate, surrendering their ticket, to get a trolley outside but then cannot re-enter unless a member of staff happens to be around. Not always. And when a packed train arrives, trying to get a trolley back in against the passenger flow causes chaos."
Mr McDowall said people arriving in Truro at the end of long-distance journeys were likely to have heavy luggage and feared the "dreaded mantra of health and safety" may be to blame for the lack of trolleys, questioning why the situation should be different at other stations.
He said: "If trolleys are so dangerous why are they available on every platform at Paddington? They are chained up there and a temporary coin in the slot is needed so where is the risk to life and limb so feared at Truro?
"Why cannot lightweight trolleys requiring a coin be introduced at Truro and this very unattractive and ludicrous first impression for new arrivals to Cornwall halted."
Train company First Great Western and VisitCornwall, the organisation to promote tourism in the county, chose not to comment.

Absolutely nothing to do with 'elf n safety. HSE▸ wouldn't give a flying f too hoots whether FGW▸ provided trolleys or not.
FGW's bean counters and insurers might though...

Genuinely cannot remember the last time I ever used a luggage trolley at a station, or an airport for that matter. In fact, I was so oblivious that before reading this article I had no idea that they even generally existed at stations anymore...

They're something of an anachronism, now that nearly everyone has wheeled suitcases. Even at Southampton, where people often show up for cruises laden down with more than typical quantities of luggage, it is quite rare to see the 'coin op' trolleys in use.
Having said that, on the odd occasions that they are used there doesn't seem to be any problem with taking them through the wide aisle gate...

It is an absolute impossibility that "no staff are around" when the gates are in operation. It is a legal requirement that at least one person is available during operational hours. Did this passenger ask for a trolley?
I believe the reason they are located in the booking office is because of the narrow platform on the down side.
Coin operated trolleys are scheduled to be installed very soon.

Although Truro station (platforms 1-3) remains in good condition, the former yard could do with some serious redevelopment, even a wooden fence behind the 'up' platform would remove the 'eyesore' that is the yard. As TOC▸ 's love portraying their smart clean image, have a word with Network Rail and get something done, or at least get the weeds cut down  |
