Rail passengers in Exmouth can commute to Exeter earlier in the morning on Sundays during the winter.

This is thanks to the addition of a 10am service which will operate for the first time. The timetable change has been achieved following pressure from the Avocet^▸ (Branch line from Exeter to Exmouth) Line Rail Users Group.

Tony Day, chairman of the group, said: "We think people will be glad to use this service. Times have changed, with new work patterns; shops open on Sunday and much more leisure travel. We put this to First Great Western, who agreed with us, and Network Rail have now said the train can run."

The Sunday train service from Exmouth operates every hour from 9am in spring and summer.

Tony added: "We are still pressing for the 9am train to run all year too, again with backing from First Great Western."

this is a great step forward,its not only good for the people living along the line who would like to get into exeter earlyer but it also provides an early park and ride option for exeter

Hopefully the trend will travel north too, we could do with a 9am Sunday service into Bristol on the SVB line.

Could do with travelling south too - St Ives branch has NO trains on Sunday morning - Park 'n Ride customers only find out at the platform.

Likewise, the first Falmouth branch train arrives into Truro 11.36, already missing several 'out of the county bound' trains....

The situation for North Devon is even worse, with the first train not leaving Barnstaple until 11.10, with arrival in Exeter at 12.23, so half the day is gone already. If you need to travel long distance on a Sunday, having a car is the only option to get to either Exeter or Tiverton Parkway.

It shows how far we have come in a few short years that the service criticisms are about the timings of the first Sunday services. Many of these branches are doing very well to have an all year round service on Sundays.

It wasn't just branch lines, I remember a few years ago the first train from Teignmouth and Dawlish to Exeter was at about 09:00 with the next not running until after 14:00.
