Sorry to muddy the waters, but following 'Fares Simplification' the names were changed, although the ticket codes remained the same.

SOS - Anytime Single (formerly 'Open')
SDS - Anytime Day Single (formerly 'Standard Day')
SVS - Off Peak Single (formerly 'Saver')
SSS - Super Off Peak Single (formerly 'SuperSaver')
CDS - Off Peak Day Single (formerly 'Cheap Day')

xxR for the return versions.

These are the official ATOC» (Association of Train Operating Companies See - here) names and the pros and cons of using them have kept many a rail forum topic going. It is a little weird that the names were changed but not the codes. Cost and re-training staff were probably the main reasons for keeping the old codes.

Perhaps the acronyms page can show the new names with the the former names bracketed as I have done.

(EDIT: There are literally hundreds of other codes covering things such as First Class,Travelcards, Advance, Business/Executive, Seasons, International......ad infinitum)

Acronym or Abbreviation ?

Everything mentioned in this thread is an abbreviation rather than an acronym. The list of acronyms (and other abbreviations) is mainly made up of abbreviations as well.

I had a Google to find a proper definition of acronym, found this one:- very interesting: useful if you wish to be really pedantic (Moi ?) or for quizzes !

Does anyone know exactly what this ticket type is?  I see that it appears on the NFM▸ (National Fares Manual), usually at around half the price of the cheapest advance fare but it is never available to buy online.  Is this some special rate?

I assum it is not normally avilable but would be activated if and when then TOC▸ (Train Operating Company) does a special promotion.
