It used to be 250 yards from the bus stop at "The Spa" to this one at Snowberry Lane.   Then the move the bus stop from "The Spa" 85 yards north.    Then they moved it 85 yards north again.   We've now got these two bus stops 80 yards apart ...

Both served by the same 271, 272 and 273 routes ... yep, those are the same routes that stop about 600 yards before the road crosses the railway before Melksham station,  then go right past and don't stop for 1/4 of a mile beyond.

Is there a case for a bit of sanity, or have I missed a perfectly logical explanation?

In the town I lived in for years before I moved recently had two bus stops no more than 30 yards apart and are both served by the same busses. whats more confusing is the other year the council were replacing plder bus shelters with new plastic sheds and replaced both of the bus stops.  Huh not surprisingly though you always had people getting on at bothbus stops as a little walk was inconvenient

If they're over 60, it's free travel - so why not?  Roll Eyes

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post - a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London, depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

You can't have bus stops by stations due to the fact that  DaFT» (Department for Transport - critical sounding abbreviation I discourage - about)'s daft policy is that buses have to compete with trains.

It would provide too much and too logical "Public Transport" to have a stop near  Melksham Station

Well, when it comes to logic, what are you on about? You can't have bus stops next to stations?

Like Oxford, Didcot, Reading, Cardiff, to name a few places where pretty much the first thing you see when you set foot outside are... bus stops. Or like Moreton-in-Marsh, where all the local bus services will (finally, after much faffing about) run from the railway station when the new timetables start in December.

I'm sure that 8F was writing tongue in cheek (I'm sure you realised that too, Will, but I'm just adding this comment for any newer readers to the forum!) ...but there are times that I really wonder if the 'powers that be' are making decisions more for their own ends than those of the passengers ... no doubt it's much more profitable to get people to drive to a station and pay for parking there than to provide a bus or a local train ...

Doesn't happen though...St Austell + Penzance Bus & Train fully integrated.
Bodmin Parkway, St Erth, Totnes have stops on Railway property.
Redruth, Truro, Par, Liskeard, Plymouth, Newton Abbot, Exeter adjacent to the Station.

When you say Penzance and St Austell are fully intergrated what happens if the bus or train is late?

In particular what happens particularly if it's the last bus/train to that destination?

Came across full intergration in Erfurt, the last rams out of the city terminate at tram/bus interchanges. Connections were advertised as guarenteed.
