I saw one of the live feeds during Breakfast news this morning but not the one mentioned in the article. It wasn't just about level crossings but about vandalism on the railways which un-surprisingly goes up in August! Sorry to risk offending any teachers who post here but IMHO^▸ (in my humble opinion) children should be in school! Six weeks off is way too long as I'm sure many parents, shop owners and the police would agree with.

From the Bristol Evening Post:

A man died when he was struck by a train near Weston-super-Mare.

The man, who has not been named, was hit near Weston Milton railway station by a train travelling between Bristol Parkway and Weston-super- Mare at 6.15pm yesterday.

He was confirmed dead at the scene by paramedics. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "Inquiries are ongoing and a file will be prepared by the coroner."

Rail services to Weston-super-Mare were disrupted until 8.15pm, when the line had been cleared.

Anyone with any information should contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040.

Railway police pilot new cameras

British Transport Police officers who patrol railway crime hotspots in the South West are to wear clip-on cameras designed to catch offenders in the act.

Since January Network Rail says it has recorded 300 incidents of railway crime committed by young people.

The line near Swindon station, Sydney Gardens, Bath, Stapleton Road, Bristol, Yate, St Austell and Torquay stations have all been subject to crime.

Police in Swindon, Bristol, Gloucester, Exeter and Plymouth are taking part.

Liz Heading, Network Rail's community safety manager, said: "Using these clip-on cameras is another effective tool in our armoury to tackle railway crime."

Ch Insp Paul Richards, south west sector commander, said: "Route crime is a major issue for British Transport Police and, sadly, it is often children who engage in this activity, usually in the form of trespass. I would appeal to parents to emphasise the dangers to your children and to ask yourself if you know where your kids are playing."

Um, am I missing something here? What difference would it make for a uniformed BTP^▸ (British Transport Police) officer to wear a camera. Surely police officers catching 'offenders in the act' is sufficient grounds for arrest and prosecution. Or are the CPS now to reluctant to prosecute without video evidence? Did crimes never get solved before the widespread use of video cameras? Yes, they are a useful tool for recording crime as it happens, but they certainly do nothing to prevent a crime happening in the first place. Surely a better use for the money spent on these cameras would be to spend it on crime prevention.

The CPS are totally fu**ing useless! All the refurbed west fleet now have forward facing cameras, have a look next time in the top left hand corner of the second mans windows on 150/153/158, they are also on the 143's somewhere, is all linked into the CCtv system.
