Booked into the hol inn express thursday night - last time i stayed there I had a season and did as follows:
1. Shuttle bus drops at station, use ticket to go through and out - check in and dump contents of ruck sack 2. Use season to go back through, go to tesco 3. Use season to go back to hotel 4. Next morning, use season to get through station to get shuttle bus back to office
Now as i'm doing this only twice a week, i do not have a season at the moment but will have a return ticket. What are my chances of doing the above without an officious gate line staff confiscating it thinking ive just arrived off a train.
Yes I know I can walk down to the road and over the bridge I'm just bone idle.

Just say you forgot to get a receipt and ask that you keep it.
Good luck, as apparently the TOCs▸ own our tickets (lucky them, I can think of other things I'd prefer to own)!

An extra 250 metres by my reckoning, but at least those bone idle legs won't have to climb those nasty old footbridge steps going that way...

Go on, do it. It's win-win for you, if they let you through you can post on how lax they were, if they insist on taking the ticket you can post to say they were jobsworths. but out of pocket to the tune of a peak Slough to wos ticket which I would not be able to get on board as I'd have no ticket to get through the barrier

Simples.

Well, stations are not a public right of way. An alternative route is available, it's down the road and over the bridge, it's only 250m (approx).
Craven Arms? And in that case, the alternative is well over the 275 yards that it is at Slough!

I've no idea about what goes on in the sticks They built a housing estate near the rail line, and the main footway to the town centre is over the rail station footbridge!

I suppose you could always book a cab? Get a receipt and claim for it on your expenses? Claim for it on your tax? Or put it on your bill to the clients you are meeting? (I'm sure the NHS had an official "walking" mileage allowance.) Are platform tickets still available?

The footbridge at Moreton-in-Marsh is a longstanding right of way, well back into the 19th century - it avoids using a perilously narrow footpath on the bridge taking the Fosse Way over the line at the north end.

This was meant as partially tongue in cheek! Is it not a bit like Swindon which used to be a cut through for the college?
And yes I know its not a public right of way - nor are many other stations!
I was just pondering the difference between not haveing a season and having one - when just trying to access the platform!

I'm not station staff, but I'd guess that somewhere there is a by-law that states you have to have a valid ticket to enter the station / platform area, or be a bona-fide traveller. Doubtless within the hour someone will be quoting which by-law, sub-section and page number, I'll set the stop-watch running. But I will have a valid ticket - I just wont be using it - I'll be changing my mind after entering the station and just leaving by a different exit. And I am a bona fide traveller - I worked out - I spend about 1.7K a month on train tickets! - 1100 is the season and 600 is random diversions via newport and extra journeys
