What did I pass at Swindon tonight...........

Okay, i've seen a few canary yellow trains with innards ripped out in the past but this was different.

Was on the 1939 from NWP to PAD^» and as we went through swindon....... on the middle track there was an ancient engine - dont ask me what it was but it was in old BR^▸ colours where it could be seen beneath the grime

Behind it were two canary yellow HST^▸ cars - again no idea of the MK^▸ or what ever. The first one seemed to be a normal SC car with all its seats

The second was a buffet and I could see someone making tea in there!

No machinery or inner gubbins replaced as I could see

What was it?

Sound likes a Class 31 - see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_31 - hauling a couple of Mk3 Network Rail inspection coaches.

Network Rail have a quite a collection of track recording coaches an other surveying trains. Where once the track was patrolled on high speed routes this is not always safe and can not pick up all the defects so trains are run quite regularly the data when processed in Derby is sent to the Area Maintenance Manager, NR^» has an HST^▸ set for this so it can run at service speed.

If you are interested there is a little more info here, it's been sat in Bristol for a few days and is obviously doing a few local lines. 31454 in intercity livery, was used for a while running to Weymouth in the summer for Wessex.

Originally 2 31's top and tailed the smaller test train, they now have the one with a DBSO^▸ .
