Not often you'll see that as a thread title but I mean it. On a day where a light dusting of snow meant widespread cancellations of tubes and buses in London, FGW▸ still managed to operate into Paddington on a reduced service. Bravo to all.  |

Despite the problems, trying counts for an awful lot. So thanks FGW▸ for not giving up in the way that other operators and London Buses seem to do this morning. I hope none of the traincrew get home too late cos it looks like we will need your hard work tomorrow.

FGW▸ as a diesel traction operator do have less problems in the snow, 3rd rail traction run the risk of smashing shoes off and overhead can have ice on the contact wire smashing pan carbons but I do think a lot of TOC▸ took the easy way out this morning
Well done indeed FGW staff for providing a sterling service today and we most not forget the NR» maintenance staff out in the snow fixing any problems as they arise.
Thought for the day ...... why oh why does the Tube network which operates basically indoors suffer from snow!!!!!

i suspect some of it is staff who are not motivated enough to battle into work in the snow |

No. The two underground lines which are fully covered (Victoria and W&C) are running.
The others are disrupted by the 8 inches of snow!
And I think TOCs▸ cancelled peoples' trains to work to try and limit numbers in London who might be stranded!

W&C is open now but it was closed all morning. |

All Tube depots are outside, its lucky that Walthamstow wasn't covered in snow otherwise the Victoria line would be suspended too. |

Others have mentioned the depots - but IIRC▸ there really is more mileage (about 55%) on the surface than underground... It was a bit odd to see the Waterloo & City 'closed due to adverse weather' this morning though  . I guess the drivers (part of the Central line) couldn't get in from Leytonstone or wherever they are based... Paul |

Just to be pedantic, the Waterloo & City is entirely underground, including its depot. However, the depot has no direct rail connection and vehicles requiring heavy maintenance are lifted to the surface by a specially adapted road crane, via a purpose built shaft. |

Coming back to the topic, not so well done tonight with 3 consecutive evening trains from London to Temple Meads cancelled due to problems in the Didcot area.
