From the Exeter Express and Echo:

Quote
An Exeter University student has admitted living a secret life as a graffiti artist who caused thousands of pounds of damage to trains in the city.  Dean Buckley, 23, who has since graduated from the university, pleaded guilty at Exeter Crown Court to causing criminal damage.

British Transport Police told the Echo how they caught Buckley red-handed, spraying a train at the city's Riverside yard, near St David's railway station.  They say he was risking his life and causing misery for rail passengers, as trains would need to be removed and cleaned, by repeatedly breaking into the yard with his graffiti crew.

Buckley pleaded guilty to three offences of causing criminal damage to First Great Western and South West Trains vehicles when his trial was due to start yesterday.  He had already admitted three similar charges at an earlier hearing.

Defence counsel Lee Bremridge said Buckley, who already had a conviction for vandalising a wall, was an Exeter University student at the time but had now graduated.

Buckley had caused ^7,500 to ^8,000 damage.

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

In order to do that much damage to the Pacers he must have spent ^14,000 on paint...  Tongue

2 days ago, I saw management types photographing a graffiti covered HST (High Speed Train) power car at BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains) (Bristol TM(resolve)).  Although I agree with vacman to a point, perhaps tasking offenders to assist in cleaning up their mess would be beneficial.  However, they would probably need 12 weeks training before being let near rolling stock. Hold on! I have just read this comment by an accomplice of the defendant.  (Available at the URL posted above).

"I am the other 'artist' who was convicted along with Mr. Buckley and I am currently serving 220 hours community service, of which I have completed 104 hours since July when I was sentenced. I very much enjoy community service, I'm currently working in a 'Help the Aged' charity shop and I find alot of great items each week, but I would prefer if they put my skills to better use, i.e painting murals but I suppose that wouldn't be much of a punishment as I enjoy it so much. I will be very upset if Mr Buckley is sentenced to jail for this, luckily for me my case stayed in magistrates court as the combined damage of the trains i was charged for came to just under 5000 pounds meaning the case was unfit to go to crown court. I think the possibility of a custodial sentence is highly inappropriate for these trivial art crimes."

Over to you Judge Vacman!

What a shame that time limits have now expired. However, I am sure that this 'artist' will offend again.  Hopefully, his comments will be used by the CPS.

I wish I was together enough to make a note of the student's name and then track him down in a few years when he's grown up a little and arrange for some "trivial art crime" to be daubed on his car, across his garage door, over the front of his house....

Tis so simple, if some scum bag causes ^50 worth of Damage fine them ^100,
if it's ^5,000 worth of damage make it a ^10,000 Fine.

If they can't afford the fine put them in Jail, 1 Month for every ^1,000 worth of fines.

Your suggestion is very simple, and has a lot too commend it. Except I would fine them ^50 and make them pay ^50 compensation to the injured party.

It's not only rolling stock.

Some more "trivial art crimes" at Bath Spa station. Though I would suggest it's a bit embarrassing that it could happen at a major station.

IIRC (if I recall/remember/read correctly) the station is only unstaffed for about 4 hours a day, early hours of the morning. So the wouldn't have had long, must have broken into the station somehow. But that should be what the CCTV (Closed Circuit Tele Vision) will show.

Hmm.  Bath Spa Station is also within 'line of sight' of the Avon & Somerset Constabulary's district headquarters in Manvers Street, so the culprits were indeed taking a chance.  Roll Eyes
