If we look at the geometry of the shadows of the telegraph lines, then we have some useful information. Especially if the photo is moderately recent (because we're currently v close to the autumn equinox).

If the line is running east-west, then the angle at (local) noon will correspond to the latitude. My protractor (you can start to see how old I am) gives this as 21.5 degrees - slightly to the N of a place called Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

So we're probably not talking about an east-west line.

If the line is running north-south, then we're looking at a photo taken at about 11:00 or 13:00 local sun time. Interest now centres on the shadow of the telegraph pole instead of the wires. Doesn't look as if this is at much of an angle to the platform - perhaps the same sort of 70-80 degree angle.

So my money is on somewhere reasonably far south in the US. Probably Florida, but possibly Georgia. There's more British tourism into Florida, so let's go with that.

But when I start looking for British names on railways in Florida I draw a blank. Florida's names are much less British-settler than the states further north. I'm not seeing anything in wikipedia that fits the bill, either in Florida or Georgia.

Is it possible that this is a station (sorry - depot) that no longer has a passenger service? That would explain the neatly-manicured grass (which did originally suggest Switzerland).

I'm very impressed by all the geometry and angle of the sun stuff.  It was indeed middle of the day - last Saturday - but I think the line is running more East - West at this point.   I AM on a slow connection here today ... so I'm not going to check this via Google Maps!

I've looked at the maps. Line does seem east-west through the town. But (alas) Carlisle PA▸ (Public Address (broadcast loudspeaker announcements) or Passenger Assist (railway staff providing physical assistance to passengers with mobility issues), depending on context) is about latitude 40 degrees N so I'm way out!

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post - a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London, depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

You got a gold star for Carlisle ... then rather tarnished it by adding in the "new" ... which it ain't.
