Drivers are facing months of disruption on the troubled M5 Avonmouth Bridge, with work about to start on the first phase of a ^7 million scheme to resurface and waterproof the entire structure. The work has been in the pipeline since 2006 and will be carried out in two stages. But with the first phase alone set to last for up to five months, motorists have been warned they could face long delays when using the bridge.

The Highways Agency said the bridge needed major work as the existing road surface had worn out. Contractors will start on the southbound carriageway on September 1 and continue until January. Work on the northbound carriageway will begin in 2009. The agency said throughout the contract there would be narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit in place, with speed cameras in use. There will also be a contraflow system at times but the cycle path will remain open.

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post - a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London, depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

Only 5 years after the last resurfacing?

More good news for Portishead commuters. Now if only they had a rail link, there's an idea....
