Where is there a 110mph on the main line between Paddington and Bristol via Swindon?

Performance data - i've set it so it averages below 125mph as some figures were coming out as 140mph+!

Firstly - why are the quotes so disjointed?

Secondly - the timings between Reading and Swindon are based on 110mph running, which is what a lot of drivers stick to along that route. Clearly not you 12hoursunday Wink

Why do drivers stick to that lower speed? Surely it is better to arrive early, lest a delay occurs.

12hoursunday, it's more due to the fact that when you've got short distances with just minute interval timings you can hit very high speeds on averaging...

I would assume drivers keep to the lower speed owing to the possible problems that could occur on OEO (One Engine Only (class 43 HSTs with problems))?

The route is cleared for 125mph but booked timings are for 110mph. Saves fuel costs and the couple of minutes slack enables a late running service to run at 125 and make up time.

The 110 was tongue in cheek in response to a rumour that in normal running 110 suffices to keep time.

This is the biggest load of codswallop I've read on this forum. The linespeed is 125 and thats what the majority (if not all) do unless the equipment we are working with prevents us from doing so (ie. one engine, broken windows or other things which for whatever reason may be isolated!)

Glad to hear this. It is an insult to Brunel/GWR (Great Western Railway) if drivers do not take advantage of the line so well built by him/them.

I'll agree with 12hourssunday. Virtually everyone drives to 125mph - especially if it's the drivers last trip of the shift!  Wink
