I saw Hannah and Claire, Karen and Dave, Rebecca and Madeline yesterday, though I did not travel with them. Who or what are they, and why are they relevant on a transport forum?

Pullman coaches comes to mind.
Oriental Express ones on a UK▸ (United Kingdom) run somewhere?

Then again, possibly camping coaches, but there's five of them, and usually there's only one or two together.

They are the carriages behind Goliath on that train approaching Kingswear - yes, "Dave"  is in there!
