In the GBR (Great British Railways) sale I got myself a low cost fare from London to Inverness and one to use just ahead of it from Melksham to London.  Also signed up for Scotrail Club 50 and need to choose what to do on 4th and 5th.  Returning home (as outward) with LNER» (London North Eastern Railway - about) - it will be interesting to update myself on how others do it.

I think the £17 day return go anywhere fares will have finished on their Club50 - but check.

I hope that the smart card that Club50 is loaded on arrives before you leave. You can't get them reissued at ticket offices I believe.

I already have my Club50 card, and for the 4th I have a return trip from Inverness all ready for collection in printed ticket form from a TVM (Ticket Vending Machine) near me.  5th remains up in the air.  If the Highland had only built its branch to Kinlochbervie, I would renew my acquaintance of over 50 years ago with that community.

Research the postbus routes for the far north - I think one connects somewhere up the far-north line with the northernmost coast - Durness area. Worth it for the views you only get from roads not rail.

If you are talking about Royal Mail postbuses, the last one ceased running in 2017.

This is what you need Grahame - https://www.highland.gov.uk/downloads/file/755/t1_kinlochbervie_dial_a_bus

Highland Council's Public Transport website seems to be the contemporary equivalent of the old Highlands and Islands  combined timetable. This was a great publication, with entries along the lines of "Lochmiddleofnowhere - to - Glen Backofbeyond - telephone 01789 23456 for Angus McDougal for a taxi on Tuesdays and Fridays"
