Oh dear.......fate can so easily be tempted.

Due to a points failure between Reading and Basingstoke some lines are blocked. Disruption is expected until 14:15 30/04.

Think that one has eased.
There were 3 Cross Country services and a few freights q'd up towards Reading earlier.  Think the longest delay was 119 minutes when I checked pre lunch.

Over the weekend I saw that the Orange Army had started work on the northern side of the Sonning Cutting, adjacent to the A4 road bridge. I presumed that that had possibly meant that they had finished on the southern side. According to one.network Network Rail Infrastructure will be closing one lane of the Shepherds Hill roundabout until the end of June.

Apparently the nature of the failure means the risk is from material build up in the cess as it slumps over the temporary retaining wall as opposed to a rapid large scale failure.  The risk can be assessed by updates from a watch person and images from site.

Stabilisation work has been ongoing since the original slip a month or so ago, which you can clearly see as you pass it on the train.

Seem to be taking the opportunity tomorrow (strike day) to close Reading/Paddington for engineering work - I guess this?

ASLEF's ongoing action of course will also reduce wear and tear on the network (and its trains) by ensuring that fewer people are using it in future.

There is still a half hourly Elizabeth line service and the usual numerous freight trains but they can be easily accommodated on a two track railway.
