Always good to see a Bulleid Pacific. In general, did he ever design a duff one apart from the infamous Leader class?

If not duff then certainly overcomplicated for the reality of maintaining them, hence the decision to rebuild in a simplified form. Having said that, Clan Line in particular does seem to be one of the most reliable regular mainline runners, without the high profile failures you hear of for some of the other regulars.  That reliability may well be at least partly down to the original design and build quality.

But whoever was responsible for designing the net result of the rebuilt locos did "ace it" - they were really handsome engines. Almost pretty enough to be GWR▸ (Great Western Railway) designs.......

The original plan for the pacifics was to have the crankshaft driven with gears and a propellor shaft, as with a rotary cam poppet valve motion. This had to be abandoned because the necessary gears could not be obtained in 1941. It was then he moved to the chain driven version.
