12th January 2024 Cancellations to services between Newton Abbot and Plymouth Due to a fault with the signalling system between Newton Abbot and Plymouth fewer trains are able to run on the line. Train services running through these stations may be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes. Disruption is expected until the end of the day. A few Cross Country cancelled as it appears all Plymouth - London (non) runners. The Plymouth - London only using the Penzance - London services.
Remind me, Plymouth to Newton is Exeter controlled, or both?

Fault (currently) rectified. Data signal failure meant signalling lost between Preston Sands - Newton Abbot & Dainton Tunnel.

Cancellations to services between Plymouth and Newton Abbot Due to flooding between Plymouth and Newton Abbot the line towards Newton Abbot is closed. Train services running through these stations may be cancelled or delayed. Disruption is expected until 12:00 09/02. Customer Advice Sincere apologises to customers. Owing to high river water levels at Brent Mill Viaduct in Devon we are only able to run trains on one of the two lines between Newton Abbot and Plymouth. Services will be severely reduced with roughly only 1 train per hour in each direction and those trains which do run will incur a delay.
Ivybridge will see almost all trains cancelled. Customers should use the help point on the station for further assistance.
We have requested replacement road transport to operate between Plymouth and Paignton and waiting for this to be confirmed by the operator.
We're sorry for the delay to your journey.
We will update this message with more information when we have it. CrossCountry are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice (??). Arrangements have been made for Great Western Railway rail tickets to be accepted for these journeys. Further Information An update will follow within the next 2 hours. If you require further information please speak to our staff at the station or on the train, use the Customer Help Point, tweet us @GWRHelp or call National Rail Enquiries on 03457 484 950.
If you arrive at your destination 15 or more minutes late because your GWR▸ train was delayed or cancelled, you can claim Delay Repay compensation. Please keep your ticket and visit GWR.com/DelayRepay Last Updated:09/02/2024 04:23
I did note the 05h03 Penzance to Paddington was to be capped at Plymouth, but can't see it now. This is the first through train to London each day.

Delays to services between Plymouth and Newton Abbot Delays to services between Taunton and Exeter St Davids Delays to services between Exeter St Davids and Okehampton via Crediton Cancellations to services between Exeter St Davids and Paignton via Newton Abbot Delays to services between Exeter St Davids and Exmouth via Exeter Central
Delays to services between Exeter St Davids and Exmouth via Exeter Central (and all other Exeter lines - my addition) Following failure of the electricity supply earlier today between Exeter Central and Exeter St Davids all lines are now open. Disruption is expected until 15:00 21/02. Train services between Exeter St Davids and Exmouth via Exeter Central and Topsham are returning to normal but some services may still be delayed.

And just after that the s#it hit the fan again at Brent Mill Viaduct.
No trains will run tomorrow (22nd) between Plymouth and Newton Abbot until at least 10.00, when the structure can be properly inspected.

Brent Mill Viaduct on the edge of South Brent seems in the last year to have become the location between Exeter and Plymouth most at risk to causing major disruption to rail services.
Yet the NR» Contracted PR▸ machines and remote Swindon based Senior Management responsible for NR Infrastructure in the far South West have yet to make a public a statement, at minimum advising what the problems are and what actions are in hand to remedy this ongoing problem.
Clearly the Dawlish Sea wall is not the only hazard on the precarious South Devon rail route to Plymouth and Cornwall. At least the folk of Tavistock and even Cornwall are increasingly aware of the advantages of Okehampton compared to Plymouth as their nearest railhead.

The water level at South Brent is normally around ankle deep. After heavy rain it’s knee deep and the flow of the water is such that it’s scouring the bridge abutment.
Now, obviously I’m no engineer, but I’m going to give my solution anyway! Here goes. Boulders! A few well placed boulders around the abutment and in front as a short term solution would reduce scouring to a point where the line could remain open?

Cancellations to services between Penzance and London Paddington via Plymouth Due to heavy rain flooding the railway between Plymouth and Exeter St Davids some lines are blocked. Disruption is expected until the end of the day. Train services between Penzance and London Paddington via Plymouth may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Customer Advice - For any customers intending to travel between Exeter St David's and Plymouth today it is very much regretted that there is likely to be significant disruption to your journey for which we apologise.
Passengers whose journey will take them through the Plymouth to Newton Abbot section of line are strongly advised to defer their journey until later today (10:00 or later) as any journey attempted prior to mid-morning will be very seriously impacted by this incident. - Heavy rain has flooded the railway in the Totnes area which will affect our ability to run train services between Exeter St David's and Plymouth in both directions. There will be virtually no train service operating over that section of line until after 10:00. Please note that this incident does not directly affect local trains between Paignton and Exeter St David's via Newton Abbot. - It is anticipated that only a very limited train service will be able to operate between Exeter St David's, Newton Abbot, Totnes, Ivybridge and Plymouth in both directions, and those which do run will be very busy and also delayed due to a speed restriction through the affected area. - In the opposite direction train services FROM Plymouth to Exeter St David's are not expected to be able to operate until after 10:00.
Arrangements have been made for GWR▸ ticket holders to use Cross Country services via any reasonable route. However, kindly note that CrossCountry services will be similarly severely affected by this incident. - Arrangements have been made for GWR ticket holders to use South Western Railway services between Exeter St David's and London Waterloo. - GWR tickets are now being accepted on the following local bus routes:
Number 7 (Exeter bus station - Newton Abbot - Totnes)
Stagecoach Gold (Paignton - Totnes - Ivybridge - Plymouth Royal Parade)
Number 38 (Exeter bus station - Ivybridge) - Rail replacement coaches have been requested to operate over the affected route but these have not yet been confirmed and will initially operate between Plymouth - Totnes - Newton Abbot. Train services will be available between Newton Abbot and Exeter St David's. - - For further information, please speak to a member of staff or trigger a help point located at platform level. You can also contact our social media team via X (formally Twitter). - Further Information An update will follow within the next 2 hours. If you arrive at your destination 15 or more minutes late because your GWR train was delayed or cancelled, you can claim Delay Repay compensation. Big cancellations from/to Plymouth. Rail replacement busses will be difficult as it's a school/college weekday, so all engaged on those runs. Thank you a-driver for your reply. Just wondering that perhaps a few more cross-overs either side of South Brent, with more signals to permit trains to be stacked along the line for single line working over the affected section. That, of course, involves a financial expenditure, so highly unlikely.
