Cancellations to services between Great Malvern and Oxford via Worcester Shrub Hill
Due to signalling staff being taken ill between Worcester Shrub Hill and Moreton-In-Marsh the line is closed. Disruption is expected until 11:00 09/06.
Train services between Great Malvern and Oxford via Worcester Shrub Hill and Moreton-In-Marsh may be cancelled or delayed.

Owing to there being no Signaller for the Norton Junction signal box we are currently unable to run trains between Worcester Shrub Hill and Moreton-in-Marsh.

This has resulted in the cancellation of the 08:15 from Foregate Street:
Quote
08:15 Worcester Foregate Street to London Paddington due 10:26 has been cancelled.
This is due to signalling staff being taken ill.
Last Updated:09/06/2024 08:22

The next two up trains are to start from Shrub Hill - so perhaps there has been some quick shuffling of available signallers from Henwick or Newland East to Norton Junction:
Quote
08:58 Great Malvern to London Paddington due 11:24 will be started from Worcester Shrub Hill.
It will be delayed at Worcester Shrub Hill.
This is due to signalling staff being taken ill.

09:58 Great Malvern to London Paddington due 12:22 will be started from Worcester Shrub Hill.
This is due to signalling staff being taken ill.

Is it that it's a junction, or the layout of that particular junction, that prevents the box from being switched out and one of the lines remaining useable when there are not the resources to staff it? Or perhaps this has been sorted by transferring staff from a box where that *is* an option.

I suspect that you can't switch boxes out on the North Cotswold line - most control one end of a piece of single track.

Ascott-under-Wychwood : controls the country end of the single line from Wolvercote Junction (controlled by Thames Valley) to Charlbury, plus two level crossings, at Ascott and at Bruern.
Moreton-in-Marsh : double track in both directions
Evesham : controls its end of the single line to Norton Junction.
Norton Junction : double track to Shrub Hill, double track to Abbotswood Junction (on the Birmingham - Bristol line, controlled from West Midlands) but single track to Evesham
Shrub Hill : double track to Norton, double track to Tunnel Junction (on the line to Droitwich) but single track through Foregate Street and across the river to Henwick.
Henwick : controls its end of the single track to Shrub Hill (and the other single track to Tunnel Junction), and the adjacent level crossing.
Newland East : controls the adjacent level crossing
Malvern Wells : controls the start of the single track to Ledbury
Ledbury : passing loop between Malvern Wells and Shelwick Junction (for Hereford)

13:58 Great Malvern to London Paddington due 16:25 will no longer call at Worcestershire Parkway Hl, Pershore, Evesham, Honeybourne, Moreton-In-Marsh, Kingham, Charlbury, Hanborough, Radley and Didcot Parkway.
It has been delayed between Worcester Shrub Hill and Worcestershire Parkway Hl and is now 39 minutes late.
This is due to animals on the railway.
Last Updated:09/06/2024 15:17

Judging from RTT» (Real Time Trains - website), the animals were between Newland East and Henwick. Cutting out the stops means it's only 15 late at Maidenhead.

19:58 Great Malvern to London Paddington due 22:25 will be terminated at Reading.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.

As far as I know, there was never a block switch at Norton Junction.

It works AB with Worcester Shrub Hill Station; it fringed with Gloucester panel since the mid 1960s and (I believe) more recently to TVSC» (Thames Valley Signalling Centre - about); and Single Line with Direction Levers to Evesham.  I don't think there's any way that this combination of different block systems could be made switch-outable

There was a proposal (thankfully long buried) to abolish Norton Junction in the mid-1980s.  With the present Up Main becoming a single line between Worcester Shrub Hill and Evesham, and the branch and Down Main becoming a single line between Abbotswood Junction and Worcester Shrub Hill.  It got as far as some new signal posts being erected, before the powers that be thought better of it

It's sobering to hear about schemes like that which fortunatley didn't happen when the railways were on their knees in the early to mid-80s.

You can see why it was being suggested.  Departures from Worcester to Oxford numbered only 8 a day in 1984 with two hour gaps for much of the day.  There's 21 today.

There's no doubt some rationalisation was needed, but it's so much more difficult to replace lost infrastructure as we find elsewhere.

Isn't there a parallel there with the two single lines from Crediton to Yeoford?

Or the two parallel single lines in Worcester - Henwick to Tunnel Junction and Shrub Hill Station to Henwick.  This enabled the abolition of the signalboxes at Rainbow Hill Junction and Shrub Hill Junction in the 1972 rationalisation.  When, to the amazement of nearly everyone, the semaphores survived.  As then mostly still do, *F I F T Y* years later.  I gather they'll stand a while yet

Show up as "Amendments" but as far as the OWW (Oxford Worcester and Wolverhampton) route, these are outright cancellations, aren't they?  If you're waiting at Kingham for a train that didn't make it past Oxford or Worcester, your train has been cancelled
