Hmmm ... hard to know and rare enough to wish appreciate it's just one of those rare things where passengers need sorting out at the detriment of the train running.  Be they unwell because of a regular illness, or because they've been assaulted by someone else or from the effects of imbibing too much of something.

...........as long as contingency plans are robust enough to allow alternatives to be put in place rapidly to prevent other customers being stranded.

TOTAL agreement.  With cancellations reduced to a sensible rate, people would be far more inclined to put themselves out to helpnget stranded passengers to their homes/destinations in the circumstances. Be that a member of staff staying on an extra hour, or a taxi driver taking a fare that took him out of area.  And contingencies could be "allowed" to be more expensive to the railway when called into use, because the number of time they're used should be so much lower.

350 cancellations across the GWR (Great Western Railway) area - understandable in the weather.

Ironic that the Swindon to Westbury service is NOT listed ... our cancellation are staff shortages!  Of course there are plenty of drivers not driving and train managers not train managing in those other places ... but there's no way that in this complex world of specialisation that a cancelled service driver at Cardiff can hop over a couple of stops (Newport and Bristol Parkway) to Swindon and drive our train.

Cancellations to services between Westbury and Swindon via Melksham

Due to severe weather at Westbury all lines are closed. Disruption is expected until 14:00 07/12.
Train services between Westbury and Swindon via Melksham will be cancelled.

Customer Advice
The station roof at Westbury has incurred significant damage from Storm Darragh, and is not safe to keep Westbury station open; therefore WESTBURY STATION IS CLOSED!
