Transport for Wales targets "revised" as original ones fail to be met

Fewer than a third of all Transport for Wales (TfW^▸ ) rail journeys are being operated by modern trains, despite a target of 95% set five years ago.

Just 29% of TfW services are operated by new trains, introduced since TfW took over rail responsibility in Wales.

The rail operator said the pandemic had caused significant delays and some of its targets had been revised.

The company, which is owned by the Welsh government, had aimed to reach its goal by 2023.

It’s been a tough period recently. The extremely good news for TfW^▸ passengers is that the low percentage of modern trains will rise very quickly over the next year or two as new trains are now being constructed, delivered and introduced very rapidly.

This compares with GWR^▸ ’s now aging fleet of second generation DMUs^▸ for which there is no current replacement plan.

Still a lot of difficulties, but with 197s appearing on the Marches frequently and now authorised to run to Swansea there is definite sign of improvement to come. I don't think "they" got everything right with the 197s but they are certainly an improvement on a lot of the stock that appears now. Not that it's all about age – the Mk4s also make a noticeably good impression on passengers, despite being of the same era as much of the "old" fleet, and the diagram that goes to SWA^» in the evening is very welcome on GWR^▸ strike days (when not subbed by a 150).

The posters at Queen Street should have been removed though. A big case of over-promise, under-deliver, whatever the reasons for not meeting the targets.

"When" the Cardiff Valleys electrics come on stream will this push the percentage levels up?
