For the run to the station (and several other destinations besides) 'Station bikes' have long been a thing.

Despite which, thinking back to a phone call one evening while still at work:

"Someone's run a long cable through and chained all the bikes at the station together".

Presumably intending to come back in the early hours and steal the lot in one go at their leisure - a plan which has a couple of rather obvious flaws, one of which we enacted. Gathering a small array of rather mean cable cutting paraphernalia we hared up the road to find, sure enough, a mostly motley collection of scrappy looking bikes in mysteriously good running condition, but all held captive. The first one of the paraphernalia we tried proved to be most effective against the cable. Cycles released and everyone on their way, but honestly, bloody bike thieves.
