Very sad. It seems that the policeman was trying to help a distressed person on the track when the train arrived and struck the officer. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-66616022

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard. It has space for cycles, surfboards, luggage etc. A 5 car DMU▸ is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

A sad event, and a reminder of what it can mean to be on the thin blue line

Indeed, a very sad event…. and potentially a tough one for the police officer who was in a no win situation. Obviously they had no permission to be on the track but on the other hand, morally, you can’t just stand by and watch someone end their life.

I'm puzzled by the comment 'sustained non life-threatening electrocution injuries' when the line isn't third rail powered.

Possibly damaged trackside cables that carried power for signalling or station lighting ?

Appreciate I'm in the speculation stage. Thank you broadgage, hadn't thought of that option!

Sadly, it's just been confirmed that the police officer has died. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-66619728

Yes, it sadly seems to now be all, publicly at least, about the poor PC & yet nothing about the poor driver who now seems totally forgotten.
Hopefully being looked after by his employer & rail mates.
But almost certainly now feeling several times worse at knowing who he killed, rather than keeping them anonymous unless the driver seeks them out. More thought I feel, gentlemen of plod!

The support network for drivers is very good, both from the company and its appointed care system. But also from driving colleagues, many of whom will no doubt have had their own fatalities. I don’t know the exact figure but it must be somewhere around a once in ten year event for each qualified driver to have a fatality.

It would in my opinion, be a nice gesture to name a train after the late police officer, subject to the approval of his family.

He was a Sergeant, not a PC, and I suspect that the focus is on him because he gave his life in an act of selfless courage, saving another life. I hope that the driver of the train and the family of Sergeant Saville receive all the support they need.
