Steam journeys on the Harry Potter railway line could grind to a halt if a challenge to safety rules fails.

West Coast Railways (WCR), which operates the heritage route, challenged demands for central locking systems to be fitted to the carriage doors.

The owners of the Jacobite - which appeared as the Hogwarts Express in the boy wizard films - said implementing the new measures could cost £7m.

A judgement on the judicial review is expected in January.

One wonders if there is not enough ex-HST▸ (High Speed Train (Inter City class 43 125 units)) carriages about to make up a compliant rake. Maroon paint or vinyls and I doubt anyone would really notice. Of course it would need an air-braked locomotive so we can expect to see LNER» (London North Eastern Railway - about) or SR▸ (Southern Railway / Southern Region / Scot Rail / Scottish Region (rather confusing - it depends on the context)) motive power rebadged in rouge.

The Office of Road and Rail have issued West Coast Railways with a certificate of revocation for the exemption of its hinged door rolling stock with immediate effect.

Back in December, West Coast asked for a review of the ORR» (Office of Rail and Road, formerly Office of Rail Regulation - about)'s refusal to grant it further exemption.

At the time, WCRC said it remained committed to working with the ORR to find a long term solution to secure its heritage services on the main line. Options were being looked at, such as an appeal, and a new exemption application.

West Coast Railways run a number of main line tours as well as The Jacobite trains in Scotland.
