I'm just wondering if the track after the wooden gate in the centre background is in fact an old railway trackbed.

Not on the Somerset and Dorset, and not in Somerset or Dorset either...

The stone of the building might suggest Devon or Bristol

Judging by the power lines, somewhere along the Taunton to Barnstaple line, nearer the Barnstaple end?

Apologies for taking so long to reply - I thought I had, but all was lost in an internet outage. PhilWakely is getting very warm (though not that line), and bradshaw has named the right county...

That trackbed looks narrow so I'm wondering narrow guage? Along the route of the Lynton and Barnstaple railway?

Standard Gauge. L&B is warm, but not as warm as PhilWakely.

That’s the one! Just spent a week in Bampton, squelching around in the mud. I’ve always been curious to see the area around Tiverton, Morebath and the Taunton to Barnstaple line, so it was a lucky opportunity when my wife randomly booked us into a holiday cottage there for the week!

Between Bampton and Morebath Jn on the former Exe Valley line. Bugger. I went up and down that line, and many others, using various online tools -. maps, StreetView, Wikipedia, disused stations websites - all without success. I looked at plenty of pictures and StreetView imagery of station buildings, stationmasters houses, crossing cottages etc. and bleddy missed this one. Fiendish sciurus vulgaris.

I managed a trip on the Exe Valley line in the early 60s. We had been on a day trip to Exmoor and managed to get the parents to drop me off at Bampton for the 14xx to Exeter. Good end to the day.
