DfT» (Department for Transport - about) won’t authorise any increase in base personnel number

Thanks - for how long has that been the case?

Having missed the last "Meet the Manager" due to work commitments, were these issues and the subject of crew "shortage" on the agenda, and what was Mark Hopwood's response?

These three questions would have pretty much covered it if work commitments and apathy from forum members had not given Mark a very easy time of it.

I have "liked" that but will suggest a step further - should members post follow up questions there, I would be happy to bring them to the attention of Mark and his team and invite further comment from him should he wish.

Some of the topics are, perhaps, more for the DfT» (Department for Transport - about) rather than GWR (Great Western Railway) to answer, and earlier this month we invited Mark Harper, the Secretary of State for Transport, to join us in a similar session.  I will let members know if and when I hear back; if I don't hear back, the moderator team will decide whether to chase up.

A responsible forum wouldn't put Mark in a position where he is being asked to comment on the requirements of his paymasters, IMHO (in my humble opinion)

I would agree, and indeed Mark (Hopwood, I think you mean) has already clarified that some of the issues raised are those required by his paymaster.   Our problem there is that we talk to GWR (Great Western Railway) who talk with the DfT» (Department for Transport - about) and until the questions are asked we can only make an educated guess as to where one responsibility ends and another begins, so we do need to ask the questions which may fall into either area to understand where that interface line is

In the case of asking Mark (Harper) should we have the opportunity, there is a subtle difference as he's part of the government with a shared cabinet responsibility and so we can reasonably ask him questions where HM Treasury rather than DfT are setting and running the systems.

The case of two Marks! - yes, I meant Mr Hopwood.

And I agree that Mark harper would be game for any questions aimed at HMG, regardless of department for the reason you give.

Given that many of these requirements have only evolved post pandemic, it's perfectly reasonable and responsible to ask him about why his business didn't have adequate staffing levels beforehand in order that they didn't have to rely on overtime to sustain the service and why issues around Sunday working etc weren't resolved prior to this - GWR (Great Western Railway) had years to do this.

Being scrutinised and having to answer tricky questions goes with the lofty position as MD of GWR, and very generous salary.

And he was sat logged in on the forum and ready to face them.  Just a shame that none were asked.

They could have been included in the original set of questions by the Mods team - so who really chickened out?

If you include the additional questions that were emailed to Mark and were answered and posted afterwards, we did not exclude any member questions.   If you had questions you wanted answer Chris, but didn't put them though us, were you not one of the ones who chickened out  Wink ?

Not me Graham, I'm  happy with those that were asked. Seems other members aren't - & could have asked questions anonymously

Last nights up sleeper being routed via Melksham this morning.
Hope it doesn't delay the normal regular services!
