Man ends 20-year Llandegley airport sign joke that cost £25k

A man who spent £25,000 on a fake airport sign in mid Wales is bringing the joke to an end after 20 years.

For the past two decades, a billboard for Llandegley International has been a landmark near the Powys village.

It looks like an ordinary road sign, but actually signposts to an airport that only exists in people's imagination.

After spending thousands of pounds to erect and maintain the sign, the owner decided it's time to take it down.

Since 2002, if you travel eastwards along the A44 between Rhayader and Kington, you will see a sign directing drivers to Terminals 1 and 3 of Llandegley International airport.

But drive the two-and-a-half miles, as instructed, and you will end up not at an airport - not even an airfield - but just a field, on the outskirts of the village of Llandegley, Powys.

There are several spoof road signs around here. "TWINNED WITH ATLANTIS" is the most popular, a reference to the severe floods to which the area is prone. These often stay in place for years.

"TWINNED WITH FUKUSHIMA" Appears regularly on roads approaching the Hinkley point building site. These are removed promptly.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards, luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

A couple of very minor aside comments from me here, if I may?

Bristol Airport dropped the 'International' from their title in 2010 - despite their actually remaining an 'international' airport.

In the early days (1957) when it was developed as Bristol's new airport rather than Whitchurch, it took over an ex-RAF (Royal Air Force) station, called, rather amuzingly (to me, anyway) Lulsgate Bottom.

"Welcome to Cleveland" on a rooftop on the approach to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport.

And a temporary "Welcome To Luton" sign on the approach to Gatwick.

A few years back one of the "Welcome to Totnes" road signs was altered to read "Twinned with Narnia" underneath.
It lasted for a fair old while before the authorities repainted it.  Still makes me chuckle when I'm passing it.

Totnes is, rest assured, still living up to it's reputation.

Totnes is indeed in another world. I know it quite well, being from South Devon. Grin
