IIRC ('if I recall/remember/read correctly') it was effectively a very deep sand drag on a downward incline to restrain any runaways. Fitted between the up and down tracks of what was operated as a ropeway, a bloke was stationed at the points leading towards the catchpit, and he basically spent his time listening out for wagons coming down at dangerously high speed, ready to divert them off the normal tracks.
