Station  Oddities.

Q1 There were many stations with High Level and Low Level  in their names. Which pair had the greatest vertical separation?

Q2 Brighton is a three way junction. How many platforms can a train use to travel from the East Coast (Lewes) to the West Coast (Worthing)

O3 What deterrent is Network Rail employing to prevent damage to the tetrafluoroethylene {ETFE} roof panels at Manchester Victoria Station.

Q4. What was unusual about the train service to the now closed Woodville Road Halt. Which was between Cardiff Queen Street and Radyr?

Q5. A scatological Question. Where are  BOG PEA and POO?

4 I have read that they had seagull problems so l guess it is either playing gull distress or alarm calls or using birds of prey to keep them away

I would agree with that answer - or indeed suggest it's just half of platform 3, with a limit of just 4 carriages into / out of that platform from the west.

Q4 Woodville Road Halt and Maindy Halt had platforms on the up line (From Queen street) only. To travel to Queen street passengers joined the up train. The train reversed over a crossover at Maindy and returned on the down line.

The Harris hawk is a natural predator of the pesky seagull

Rail bosses have hired a new recruit to tackle the problem of pesky seagulls on the Victoria station roof.

A Harris hawk will be flown around the station every week for the next seven months in a bid to deter the winged pests - which have once again been pecking holes in the special 'bubble roof'.

Hire of the hawk, whose name is Rocky, is costing the taxpayer £6,200 for its shifts, with two per week this month and next, then one a week until next April.

The panels, made of a special plastic, were fitted in 2015 as part of the £44m transformation.

But in October 2016, when two passengers were injured after tiles on the structure collapsed and they were 'blasted' by a torrent of water.

Suspicions turned on the seagulls, and their guilt was confirmed following a full investigation.

Then, in August this year, passengers noticed the roof was compromised once again - with pools of water forcing the panels downward.

But the seagull problem was them attacking the roof panels and weakening them so water pooled and then they burst. So the official response was for the operators and NR^» (Network Rail - home page) to talk to each other so they could get them mended in time ... and by McDonalds to close down so as to not attract them (allegedly, but coincidentally).

I found myself thinking "Upper" and "Lower" rather than High level and Low level when I first read that question and found myself thinking "Tyndrum" where I can recall a tiring uphill walk.  How would that compare in height difference to the two parts of Crumlin?

My first reaction to the question was exactly the same - thinking of Tyndrum.

Upper Tyndrum: 273m 895ft; Tyndrum Lower: 225m 738ft  (a difference of 48m or 157ft). Crumlin viaduct was 200ft (61m) tall, so the height difference at Crumlin was still more than at Tyndrum. I guess the distance between each of the pairs would probably have been about the same.

Fond memories of that platform  where we turned 48544 from Hove to go back Light Engine to Redhill.
