SWR service changes due to Salisbury Accident

I thought it’s not that long since Waterloo to Salisbury via Southampton was removed from the routeing guide though?

It remains a permitted route, but only with 'Via Southampton' fares.

Probably not in the right place... and thanks for the info that Southampton may have been removed from the routing guide relatively recently.

The maps were changed in about 2013/14 or so. Apparently the background was that someone had been  told, (by the famous “man on a platform”), that a Basingstoke to Fareham season was valid via Salisbury and Southampton on the basis of it being a mapped route.

So when he was eventually challenged by a guard the individual complained, and SWT^▸ (South West Trains)’s reply was to let him off this time but they’d be changing the maps.  IMHO^▸ (in my humble opinion) “Basingstoke to Fareham via Salisbury” would never have been considered a “reasonable route” back in BR^▸ (British Rail(ways)) days.

I understand why SWR^» (South Western Railway - about) are running buses from Salisbury to Andover, but why are they running through trains from Andover to Waterloo like they normally do?  Passengers from places like Honiton and Axminster, usually with through trains, now have
* Train to Salisbury
* Bus to Andover
* Train to Basingstoke
* Train to Waterloo
which strikes me as one change more than is necessary ...

Ticket acceptance via reasonable routes on GWR^▸ (Great Western Railway) and underground would surely permit:
Honiton/Axminster to Exeter St David’s
EXD^» (Exeter St Davids - next trains) to Paddington.

I got sent to Netley (Southampton area) on a late afternoon job on Thursday last week and had to make my own way back. The journey planner I was using recommended coming back via. Reading and Bristol Parkway on which journey the connections worked out well.

SWR^» (South Western Railway - about)'s train and bus plan for the week ahead, 8th-12th November 2021:

The following train plan will be in place between Monday 08 to Friday 12 November

- London Waterloo to Yeovil/Exeter/Bristol services will run between Salisbury and Yeovil/Exeter/Bristol only, calling at their booked stations. The exceptions to this will be 08:08 Salisbury to Gillingham and the 15:23 Salisbury to Gillingham services, which are both cancelled.

- Yeovil/Exeter/Bristol services to London Waterloo services will run between Bristol/Exeter/Yeovil and Salisbury only, calling at their booked stations. The exceptions to this will be the 06:55 Yeovil Pen Mill to Salisbury, the 09:18 Gillingham to Salisbury and the 16:18 Gillingham to Salisbury services, which are all cancelled.

- A train service will operate between Andover and Basingstoke, calling at all stations in both directions.  The first service from Basingstoke to Andover will depart Basingstoke at 06:07 and will run hourly with the last train departing Basingstoke at 21:07. The first service from Andover to Basingstoke will depart Andover at 05:38 and will run hourly with the last train departing Andover at 21:38.

- There will be no train services between Salisbury and Romsey. Due to these services being cancelled, Redbridge and Millbrook are being served by GWR^▸ (Great Western Railway) services between Romsey and Portsmouth Harbour (in both directions). Some Weymouth/Poole to London Waterloo services will call additionally at Swaythling (in both directions).

- If you are at St Denys and wish to travel towards London Waterloo, please travel via either Fareham or Southampton Central.

- If you wish to alight at St Denys from a train service originating at London Waterloo, please travel via Fareham or Southampton Central.

The following buses are confirmed as running on Monday 08 November. We have requested others and, if these can be provided, the timetables below will be updated.

Eastleigh-Chandlers Ford-Romsey-Salisbury will depart:
Eastleigh at 05:30, 06:30, 09:30, 10:30, 14:30, 18:30.
Chandlers Ford at 05:40, 06:40, 09:40, 10:40, 14:40, 18:40.
Romsey at 05:55, 06:55, 09:55, 10:55, 14:55, 18:55, all arriving at Salisbury 45 minutes after departure from Romsey.

Salisbury -Romsey-Chandlers Ford-Eastleigh will depart:
Salisbury at 07:30, 08:30, 11:30, 12:30, 16:30.
Romsey at 08:15, 09:15, 12:15, 13:15, 17:15.
Chandlers Ford at 08:30, 09:30, 12:30, 13:30, 17:30, all arriving at Eastleigh 10 minutes after departure from Chandlers Ford.

Romsey-Mottisfont & Dunbridge-Dean-Salisbury will depart:
Romsey at 07:00, 10:00, 13:00, 16:00, 19:00, 22:00.
Mottisfont & Dunbridge at 07:14, 10:14, 13:14, 16:14, 19:14, 22:14.
Dean at 07:24, 10:24, 13:24, 16:24, 19:24, 22:24, all arriving at Salisbury 22 minutes after departure from Dean.

***Only read if you enjoy arcane ticketing anomalies, similar rubble, and finally, a terrible drift off-topic***

For e.g. January 6th next year, it's presumably because connection times at Salisbury are so bad and those at Southampton rather better, after the 17:50 from Waterloo connecting to Bristol, until the 21:20, the National Rail ticketing site throws out just two connecting services between Waterloo and Bristol, at 18:35 and 19:35, both with the change made at Southampton.

Then, looking at the fares Waterloo - Bath: no return fares available for those services - and a "Service error" alert should 'Other fares' be selected.

Looking at single fares, there's actually an Advance ticket at £26:60 - but, checking the conditions we have this:

"ROUTE OF TICKET - Only valid on booked South Western Railway services and required connecting South Western Railway services"

So, the advance ticket appears to be valid only on South Western Railway services - but they do not run trains between Southampton and Salisbury and will not then be running trains between Salisbury and Bristol.

Lastly there's a pair of Anytime tickets at £78:00 and £150:20, both unrestricted route and time of travel, which is again odd as, the difference in price aside, Waterloo - Bath via Southampton isn't meant to be a valid route in the first place.

Perhaps I should be checking if South Western Railway have ever had ticket acceptance on the passenger boats of the Salisbury and Southampton canal company, though I note that between West Grimstead and Canal Head, Salisbury, even the (fictitious) passenger boats were permanently bustituted, owing to non-completion of the canal route following the ruinous cost of the monstrous excavation at Alderbury, the scale of which is shown very plainly on the first 25" map for the area - and by present day LIDAR data.
