All FGW (First Great Western) staff that check tickets were issued with "Zifa" stampers which display the date, headcode and an individual number for each stamper, most staff decide not to use them but they are supposed to!

This is because they are complete rubbish!! That and its far easier to use a 'punch' as you can do a group of tickets at once while with the 'Stamp' you have to do each individual ticket. Have also witnessed while travelling on a XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) service a lad wipe the stamp off with his jumper, no doubt so he could use the ticket again. Which is another problem with them, they wipe off and smudge, often leaving a purple smudge on other unused tickets in a customers ticket wallet leading to queries then when presented to the guard. So IMHO (in my humble opinion) they are a waste of time...

This is only a problem when they are over inked

Zifa stampers were designed for "Aptis" tickets which were slightly papery, zifa stampers do bed in after a bit of use, the ink tends to be a bit stickier after about 200 stamps and stays on, As for stamping a ranger, it can be stamped once to show that the ticket has been used and does not invalidate it, if it hadn't been stamped then technicly the customer could say they hadn't used it and put in for a refund.

Mind you, SWT (South West Trains) guards have never heard of rovers ...

I once had a CDR (Off Peak Day Return [ticket type] (formerly 'Cheap Day')) on the most obscure route imaginable - can't remember what it was... required travelling on 4 trains. Just as a bit of fun I broke my journey on each one and travelled on 9 in the end. Every single one gripped it... I've got it somewhere - should really scan it.

In the end the RPIs (Revenue Protection Inspector (or Retail Price Index, depending on the context)) at Bournemouth couldn't read it...  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

That makes sense.  The current tickets are rather shiny.  The printed ink rubs off them after a while so it is no suprise that the Zifa ink doesn't stick very well
