My husband and I have decided to use the train for our summer hols this year. We are going to Newquay in August so figure it is better to sit on a train reading our books as oposed to sitting in traffic or going down the night before and spending a fortune on a hotel for 1 night. (We stay in a holiday flat for the 2 weeks). however the online system will not accept my booking. Does anyone know when I will be able to book? Also does any one have any tips as to a good train to aim for as we are going the first Saturday in August so I expect it will be heaving.

Booking for August will not be available until approximately 2 to 3 months prior to departure date.

If you look on atoctravelagents.org and click on Booking Horizons it will tell you when bookings are currently open to (give or take a few days), do not bookmark Booking Horizons page as that URL changes Wink

I think all the summer reservations will be released at the same time.
They are currently available to July 9th.
And book as soon as they  come out, don't delay even by a day.

If travelling on a weekday, avoid Friday. The train is literally RAMMED in standard class.

According to a few people I know, reservations will probably release in a few weeks for half way through August.

There are two Saturday trains - Paddington d 0806 and 1135.  Much of a muchness in terms of which one you go for, as both will be busy but shouldn't be packed.

When bookings open, have a look at the advance purchase 1st Class Single fare, it may well be very much cheaper than you think and not much more than Standard Class.   Book both ways at the same time.

It will be quieter in 1st.  If you go standard, I would recommend Coaches A and B.

The advance fares for First Great Western priced rte AP SLOUGH (route 411) on London to Newquay are as follows:

Codes in brackets are the ticket sale code and someone can probably correct me on the lettering!

All restriction codes state "Valid on date, FGW (First Great Western) train and seats shown on the ticket, plus connecting trains as required." - obviously there are no connections so that last bit does not apply.

(DBS» (Deutsch Bahn Schenker - UK (United Kingdom) website)) 1st Leisure Advance B (1st Advance B) - ^94.00
(DAS (Driver Advisory System)) 1st Leisure Advance A (1st Advance A) - ^110.50

Yes, you'll have a bloody long wait for a Newquay connection off the sleeper in the down direction.

However in August theres a weekday 21:55 ex NQY (Newquay (Station)) which makes the sleeper at Par nicely....

The 1105 Padd - Newquay is usually worse than the earlier one in terms of the clientell that use it, i.e. the 0905 is too early for all the teenagers going on the pi*s!

Why would people that arent into drugs and alcohol want to go on holiday in Newquay?? The town centre is a disgrace full of drunken youth and abandoned buildings, far nicer places in Cornwall. Newquay - Cornwalls tackiest town.... Easily.

Also why cant we spell Newton AbboT correctly on the description of this board???

Thank you for bringing that error to my attention - my mistake when I set the board up, and I take full responsibility.  Sorry - spelling now corrected.

To ooooooo

Newquay, is a great place for people watching. It also holds sentimental memories for my husband and I, it was the one place we could afford when times were leaner!  Also the Surf compititions are a great source of entertainment and amusement and the great unwashed have a great outlook on life that we could all learn from! I think we all need to remember lifes priorites, like each other, family, food, health & happiness! In Newquey people just want to have fun, chill and laugh!
