The media favourite for years was Jaywick on the Essex coast. Smart money is on it's gentrification with the next five years. Buy now, buy low.
In defence of Jaywick, I know a couple who live there, and they state that whilst it is a deprived area, it is not unpleasant to live in. Government figures take account of factors like average income, percentage of the population reliant on benefits, proportion of unfit homes, and related factors. Gathering such data is a simple matter but presents only a partial picture. They like the area, near the sea and the countryside, and a very low cost of living. They much prefer Jaywick to parts of London.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard. It has space for cycles, surfboards, luggage etc. A 5 car DMU▸ is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

Must get to the bottom of this; if the elderly couple had london or Birmingham accents they were local. Anything else and they were visitors. Nothing suggested to me that they were visitors from a very brief interaction a very long time ago. It was probably pretty obvious that we were not from Devonshire nor even an adjoining county.
A whole other topic crops up here of what the residents of "X" think of visitors coming in to their town / city - a much wider topic / new thread perhaps.

the southwest as Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire! Remembering that the old county of Dorset has been split into two unitary authorities: Dorset, and Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole. Not the most helpful/imaginative naming for a new area. Must admit that I call Dorset UA, Dorset Rural to remind myself it is no longer the county. TCP reminds me of the order of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole!

Of course, of those three towns only Poole lies within the historic county of Dorset, the others were in Hampshire.

Whilst ITV westcountry defines the southwest as Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire! Has the ITV region changed? Didn't it used to be TSW for the South West and HTV West for Bristol?

I am reminded a little of the old joke about martyrs being rewarded in heaven with 24 virgins - except if they come from (insert place name of choice) because there aren't that many virgins there... Or the Nativity play that had to be cancelled in the same town, because they couldn't find three wise men and a virgin.

Perhaps the most effective speaker (no, "performance") I have even seen. WAY off topic - saw it again in Lincoln at ACoRP▸ - now CRN‡ - Seminar report ((here))The evening session commenced with dinner at the DoubleTree followed by an inspirational after-dinner presentation by Dutch artist and social-entrepreneur, Michel Huisman. Michel recalled memories of his hometown Heerlen, in the Netherlands, and how both the passage of time and attitudes to the promotion of commerciality over emotional capital had caused the town to suffer both architectural and social damage. As a man of action, Michel then took us through his journey, taking a once crime ridden and socially deprived area of Heerlen and illustrating its transformation into the desirable Maankwartier (Quarter moon) district, with its distinctive architecture and sympathetic apartment design, providing inspiring spaces for both living and working. Michel’s quirky and entertaining presentation style was hit with the audience and provided a real “digestif for thought” for all our attendees.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITV_West_CountryA mildly confusing tale of franchises, mergers and dormant companies. All for the benefit of ITV plc and not viewers.
